Lily Allen

Ever find yourself reading a music site when suddenly there's this write-up on an artist that just doesn't jive with the rest of everything else you've been reading about on said site? Welcome to one of those moments. This one goes out to all my brothers and sisters who think that EAR FARM avoids the vast majority of music blog buzz bands solely because they've gotten some buzz. Sometimes that's true, because many times buzzzzz = baaaad. But then, it still holds true that good is good, and thus must be shared. Hey, times like these are fast defining the state of the music industry today and the "music industry" barely knows it. Buzzzzzz.

What can I say? I can't resist fun, summer-y, pop made by pretty girls. Reference the fact that it started with a crush on The Bangles and Madonna in 1985 and has continued right up through Annie. Know what I mean? Alright here's the scene...
You're lying on your back with your head on the edge of your bed, Lily Allen's booty is two feet from your head, should you:
A. take the time to find a condom
B. walk right over and you pound 'em
C. tell her that you want her love
Well the answer is D (D), none of the above.
What you should do is stop reading my played out (1990) hip-hop references and start listening to Lily Allen's music. EAR FARM isn't the first site to suggest you do just that, so why don't I just let the others explain:

Pitchfork said:
"Lily's debut single "LDN" is breezy, lilting summertime pop, a horn-tinged tribute to London-- loving without being fawning, charming without being all winks and nods. It's the sort of song that hasn't sniffed U.S. radio since the late-90s (think "How Bizarre", or Sugar Ray if they didn't suck), but will likely set up residency at No. 1 in the UK for weeks."
Heartonastick said:
"The white-Britrap musical comparisons are lazy. Allen’s singing, not MC’ing – she doesn’t talk any more than the sassiest girl groups did, and no matter how quick her tongue gets it never once feels like she’s trying to pound a square line into a round phrase. Her voice soars, and lilts, and rambles effortlessly through Caribbean-tinged early-sixties-style pop songs, disarming you while a Nellie McKay-like precociousness and her ruff-accent force double-takes."
I say, "LDN" is the song of the summer. It's the kind of song that kick starts careers. Okay, songs like these maybe sometimes start short careers, but in the land of the here and now - who cares? Lily Allen's music is a catchy/ irresistible blend of ska/reggae, old-school soul, and solid, fun, pop. She already has a major label (Parlophone) behind her so you're bound to hear more from Lily Allen as "LDN" is given wider release and once she finishes her debut album and plays a live show or two. Until that time, we've just got what's posted below.

All the freaks of the (music) industry say "oh why, oh why would I wanna be anywhere else?"

Am I allowed to say it's rubbish?

I dunno, but I don't think that pop has to be unoriginal all the time.

  2. original pop is nearly an oxymoron but more dissenting opinions are never a bad thing

i think Mike Skinner has some good stuff, lily ain't close. if she didn't have the accent to fit the current fetish for regional voices she wouldn't be getting so much air. but good luck to her.
