S/S Friends = Clothes + Music

Sam Champion guitarist Sean Sullivan has a busy summer ahead. In addition to the July release of the Brooklyn quartet's sophomore full length Heavenly Bender (North Street Records) and the inevitable slew of live shows to support it, he recently started the clothing line S/S Friends with girlfriend Sarah.

Consisting of "seasonally specific" clothing items (namely swim trunks and knit hats), the label pairs each item with a specially curated music release for every run. The initial set features mens swim trunks (see above) with a 7" vinyl single "Easy Street", which Sullivan describes as a "weird and winning study of early reggae styles and recording techniques."

The goods are already available at a number of retailers in Manhattan and Brooklyn (and even L.A.). See the list HERE or to order direct from their Cobble Hill HQ hit them up at ss@friendscanvastrunks.com.

In the meantime, be sure to catch Sam Champion on June 27th when they play the Prospect Park Bandshell with Cold War Kids and Elvis Perkins (canvas trunks optional).

Sam Champion To Record Live Album...TONIGHT

The gents of Sam Champion are not content to simply sew the oats of rock upon a long sold-out Mercury Lounge tonight and never look back. They're just far too classy for that. Instead, they're making like the carnies at the Coney Island Cyclone and taking a little snapshot of the occasion...though it should here be made explicit that instead of an embarrassing pic of them shrieking on a rollercoaster we're referring to the recording of a LIVE ALBUM to immortalize every second of tonight's rocking goodness!

So, if you find yourself unable to score a ticket tonight, fear not: Sam Champion's got you covered, and in more ways than one. They've also released another exclusive track - the freewheeling "Uncle Drums" - on RCRD LBL last month and are set to drop "Be Mine Everyone", the first single from their long-awaited sophomore album Heavenly Bender (out July on North Street Records), next Thursday, May 1st. Your party may have been yesterday but the real jam starts tonight...

Sam Champion @ Texas Garage - 15 March 2008 (SXSW Day 4, Pics)

Sam Champion kicked off The Green Owl Getdown at JELLYNYC's Texas Garage on Saturday and shrugged off the assorted hindrances that might have sidelined lesser bands - a heavily delayed start time, security's unwillingness to actually let people up to the top level of the garage, and most annoyingly a power outage that killed their entire backline just five songs in - with the same nonchalant coolness and unflappable confidence that defines their distinctive take on classic, ass-kicking rock and roll.

No power? No problem. Guitarist Sean Sullivan simply took his shirt off and caught some rays by the rooftop pool until the confused "sound guy" reset the circuit and resumed the rocking. Though we haven't given SC proper shine on EF as of yet, rest assured: this is one of my favorite bands in New York and well beyond, and we'll be giving them a whole lot more attention in the coming months with the release of their new album. I've seen these guys countless times, and whether headlining a packed house at Bowery or playing a sparsely attended eye-opener set (as on this particular occasion), they bring it each and every time. Crackling rhythms, slithering guitar lines, and irresistible hooks oh my. More photos after the jump...
