Frog Eyes @ la Flèche d'or - 6 November 2007

Bonjour de Paris! This past Tuesday night I happened to be in Paris at the same time as the band Frog Eyes. Given that I've very much enjoyed their most recent album (Tears Of The Valedictorian), that I've never seen them live, and that - well - I'm in PARIS and itching to see a show here, there was little doubt I'd find a way to make it out to la Flèche d'or to see the band dish out some Absolutely Kosher rock.

I suppose I should mention my thoughts on the venue, on the crowd, and how everything compared with what I'm used to experiencing in New York. Alright, alright. But quickly! I have huitres et macaroons to seek out.

Okay, so I thought the venue was pretty great. What it lacked in aural punch (and well balanced sound) it made up for in character and a nice comfortable and open layout. Though it was a bit hard to get to (on the outskirts, as it were), that never has bothered me before with any other club. And having taken in a million and one (plus) shows, I always thirst for new and different experiences. Though, by the looks and behavior of the crowd I'd not say this was entirely "different". In fact, the audience at this show reminded me very much of a typical Brooklyn crowd. Similar choice in rock-fan fashion, similar arms folded (yet appreciative) demeanor. I guess I was hoping for a bit more overt Frenchness to the whole thing. Turns out these people take in live shows just like we do. Quelle surprise!

The band raced through their allotted 30 minute set time (30 mins on the dot) and delivered a rather strong show overall. They seemed mismatched with the other bands on the bill, and clearly stood out as the best band playing la Flèche d'or that night. Sadly they didn't get a chance to play "Bushels" (when the song was requested they responded "it's too long, we don't have enough time!"), but each song they did play bursted with the signature Frog Eyes emotive rock sound. Honestly, just being at a club in Paris seeing rock music was enough for me to have a good time - seeing Frog Eyes on top of that most definitely made for "une nuit magnifique".

All the good Paris rock clubs are out in the 11th and 20th. It took me an hour to get to La Maroquinerie from the 13th one time. Worth it, though.

I have to say, I always felt something more...inviting? convivial? exciting? about the rock show crowds in Paris than in New York. The kids are the same, and yet...different.
