The Midnight Hours

The Midnight Hours have this to say about themselves: "We're from Japan, Texas, New York, and New Jersey. We're new-ish, yet our songs are old-ish." Okay, fair enough. Also, it seems that they've got an EP out called The Five Believers which you can purchase online at iTunes, Napster, or Rhapsody but that's not really telling you much now is it? If you're into buying music blindly you can click any of those previous links but if you want to know WHY you should check out this band, keep reading...

I've posted two of the songs from The Midnight Hours' MySpace page that most quickly grabbed my ear. If you're a fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival and/or ragtime fun then "Miss Marie" is one of those songs that'll grab you immediately. It's a two minute long romp through Southern tinged rock with dual male/female vocals that sounds like something you might hear from a band comprised of Jimbo Mathus, John Fogerty, and Nancy Sinatra...I keep listening to it over and over again. I ask myself, "why's it so short?!" and as soon as I ask I know the answer: "to keep you thirsty for more". Well, it's working. I'm going to listen again now, jerks. "Ain't It Something" also comes across as a song that CCR could've recorded if fronted by a woman. Listening to it puts me right back at this seedy bar I used to know in Raleigh, with a shot of bourbon in my hand and a Bud on the table...in fact, I kind of always had this redneck romanticized notion that a real bar should be just like that bar always was. You know, something like the bars in Roadhouse except without Jeff Healey and without the (constant) fights. In fact, the band providing the music to set the mood in my Southern dive bar fantasy always had a female singer and was someone just like The Midnight Hours.
