The Dodos @ Mercury Lounge - 6 April 2008 (pics, live video/MP3)

The Dodos wrecked Mercury Lounge last night with a sharp and deadly attack coming from three directions at once, comprised mostly of songs from their 2008 release Visiter. Combining deft chops and uncanny songwriting skill (who can not sing along with "Fools"??) Meric Long and Logan Kroeber have found that rarest of happy spots in which they're simultaneously expressing themselves as artists, proving themselves as musicians' musicians, and winning over (likely) every person they meet with irresistibly urgent hooks and melody and je ne sais quoi.

As Long stoically alternated between finger-picking delicacy and raw rock, Kroeber brought a lighter personality and loose style that offset and completed the band's sound. It's a sound that's equal parts White Stripes and Animal Collective; tribal yet raw, shredding, and bluesy. The two of them were already a full sounding 'band of extinct birds' on their own; however, adding a third member on auxiliary percussion has largely turned The Dodos into aural beasts. Who says dodos are extinct and never could fly? Pssh, these guys are right NOW and they soar! They've released one of my favorite records of the year, have blown me away in a live setting, and now have got me dropping ill-advised metaphors and dad-jokes. What's left? Well now it's your turn. Go see them live for crying out loud; I'll just wait patiently for them to return to NYC for the 2008 Siren Festival. You got that right.
