British Sea Power @ Bowery Ballroom - 18 October 2007

Whoa, TWO British Sea Power posts in one week? What gives?

Well, you know we feel how important it is to have multiple perspectives on things whenever possible, right?

Okay good. Well, the thing is that you won’t find much dissension in this post. I heart BSP, always have, always will. And after watching their CMJ headlining show at Bowery I agree completely with Matt’s Maxwell’s review. Just as in that show, the band felt a bit off for the first song, though the slow pace of opening number “A Wooden Horse” could have had something to do with it.

Partially an aside, but also lending to the somewhat lackluster kickoff – and actually preventing the whole set from ever reaching a fist-pumping crescendo – was the shockingly low sound level. The difference in volume between Pela and BSP was ridiculous, and it’s a shame the sound guy never took a half second to turn the master volume up to at least a standard headlining level. Ahh well, better to strain to hear than have your ears blown out? I’m not so sure.
Sound whining and nitpicking aside, the rest of the set was great, and while (again similar to Matt’s assertion) this was not British Sea Power at the absolute top of their game, they still delivered. The setlist was an even mix between old and new songs, and hearing favorites like “Oh Larsen B” and “Remember Me” live again was enough to make staying up too late for a third straight night well worthwhile.

i just came over from Sound Bites and i think long time BSP fans should know it was a long day for the guys - sound check at 1pm and then 10 hours of interviews and waiting... personally i quite enjoyed the set at its volume but i was aching for more chaos. up front you could still see the crazy in their eyes. They kept telling me later they didn't like how high the stage was... still, only a good sign of the good stuff to come early next year!
