Bowerbirds brought their Airstream trailerhomespun North Carolina folk to the CMJ Day Stage on Friday and won over everyone in attendance with their delicate musical minimalism. I didn't interview everyone after the show to find out that they were won over, but I didn't need to. At least 3/4 of them went up to the band after the show to purchase Hymns for a Dark Horse.
Much the same as the last time I saw them, Bowerbirds impressed me all over again with their friendly harmonies and magnetic presence. Their songs have become old friends by now and the band's ability to be a conduit between their artistic intent and the audience (always a strength) has matured recently, likely thanks to all of the time they've spent on the road in support of John Vanderslice and Mountain Goats. If you enjoy folk, see Bowerbirds in person whenever you can.
