If it were up to me...

Legendary bands that haven't released anything worth a damn in one decade since their last masterpiece should have to call it quits. We'll call it the skunk rule of music and if we enact this policy right away we just might be able to save the legacy of YOUR favorite band. Hello...Beastie Boys, REM, Depeche Mode, The Cure, U2, The Rolling Stones (who else?) - 10 years and NOTHING that belongs alongside your albums of the past?

SKUNK'D.

any rules for bands who are no longer producuing new material but are still performing great live shows of their old music? (e.g. bauhaus)

no no - in fact old timers performing their classics is a very welcome thing for most, I think, but when these bands then go and try to tie in some shitty NEW album into their tour and show...nobody gives a damn. heck, most times it seems like even the band itself has no interest in the new music - seems it's just part of the routine they feel is necessary: record album and then tour/promote.

why doesn't U2 get it that their last album worth a damn was released 14 years ago...or that Jane's Addiction's legacy would be so much greater if Strays was never released...or that Depeche Mode's new album is just NOT that good, I don't care what everyone is saying - fact is, they lowered expectations by putting out a ton of crap for years but they still haven't done anything above average since Violator.

the answer probably is that these bands just don't care what people like me think about their newest releases because they've earned "artistic freedom" but back when they DID care about the product they sold, it showed in the quality of material they put out.

help save the legends of music from themselves and lets STOP this madness!

Agreed. And with the wonderful advent of the DVD, it's totally free reign. Some of these bands don't even need a CD to tour, they'll just pump out a "concert film" and tour on that.

So logically, if you can tour on a DVD of your concert, I think we should force bands to have shows where they screen footage of themselves NOT playing. A film of a concert, and a concert with a film. BRILLIANT!!!
